East London, also known as Buffalo City (due to the fact it lies on the Buffalo River), is situated on the southeast coast of South Africa and hosts the country's only river port.
A City that still manages to retain some of its old fashioned values blended with a laidback charm makes East London one of the most appealing cities on the coast.
It is the second largest industrial centre in the province with the motor industry being the dominant employer. A major Daimler plant is situated alongside the harbour which manufactures Mercedes-Benz and other vehicles for local and export markets.
East London is all about long, white sandy beaches that appeal to surfers, swimmers and sun worshippers alike. The sweeping white beaches extend for kilometres - unpolluted and uncrowded. A star attraction is Gonubie Beach - flanked by an estuary and bluff on the north and a rocky headland on the south, this protected beach draws visitors from throughout South Africa.
Swimming, sailing, water-skiing, boardsailing and boating are enjoyed all year round, while the river mouths, lagoons and gullies provide a paradise for fishermen.
