Freedom Park is a 52 hectare heritage precinct situated on Salvokop in Pretoria. It is a site of remembrance where South Africa pays tribute to and honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice for human rights and their country during our turbulent history. The site offers visitors a 360 degree view of Pretoria and beyond.

Freedom Park does not honour those who died in any specific conflict but pays tribute to all those deserving South Africans who played a meaningful role in shaping our nation.

It consists of a series of memorial sites which are linked together by the common themes of freedom and human rights.

The major element at the Park is S’khumbuto which is a six-part memorial consisting of the massive 700m long Wall of Names which is inscribed with the names of some of those who died in past conflicts – more than 75 000 names have been listed since 2007 but the wall has space for 136 000 names. It also consists of an amphitheatre, a sanctuary, an eternal flame, the Gallery of Leaders and finally embracing everything is the semi-circle of 200 reeds.

The Garden of Remembrance is a tribute to African and human dignity and a place for renewal of the human spirit.

Freedom Park is an on-going project with five sites already open with two more sites in the process of being developed.

Visitors can take a guided tour to gain a better understanding of the complex historical, ideological and spiritual themes embedded in the architecture. The tour takes everyone on a journey of remembrance, reconciliation and self-discovery.
