Pretoria, popularly referred to as the Jacaranda City, is in the northern part of Gauteng and is South Africa's executive (administrative) capital.
During the months of October to November more than 50 000 Jacaranda trees bloom and line the streets with their purple hues.
The Central Business District (CBD) contains a large number of historically significant old buildings, including Church Square, which is the site of the first church built in Pretoria.
The surrounding leafy green suburbs contain large upmarket houses which have become homes to many foreign embassy staff.
Throughout the City several great works of architecture show a variety of influences through the years which reflect the City's diverse architectural styles, thereby creating a unique urban landscape.
The area is home to many nature reserves, with parks and gardens scattered across the city.
