Pretoria Art Museum

The Pretoria Art Museum is an imposing building which takes up an entire city block. At the time it was built its architecture of concrete and low structures stirred much interest as this style was way ahead of its time in South Africa.

Due to the fact that other museums in South Africa already had fine collections of European art it was decided that the Pretoria Art Museum would focus primarily on a representative collection of local urban and rural South African work.

It’s permanent collection contains work by legendary local artists such as Anton van Wouw, Gerard Sekoto, Henk Pierneef , Walter Battiss, Irma Stern and Judith Mason, and today it houses a collection that represents a comprehensive historical record of South African art.

The Museum has several exhibition halls that host revolving exhibitions from its’ permanent collections of paintings, sculpture, graphics, photographic prints, ceramics and tapestries.

It also hosts major national and international travelling exhibitions. The reference library has a vast book and video collection and the information centre archives newspaper clippings.

Guided tours are offered.
