The Union Buildings, built on the hill Meintjieskop in the suburb of Arcadia Pretoria, is also a national heritage site.

This is where the official seat of the South African government is located as well as housing the offices of the President of South Africa.

The building is surrounded by exquisitely beautiful terraced gardens of indigenous plants.

Within the grounds are various monuments, statues and memorials, including the imposing 9m tall bronze statue of former President Nelson Mandela which was unveiled in 2013. Madiba has his arms outstretched to symbolise his embrace of the whole nation.

Dominating the bottom lawns on horseback is the statue of General Louis Botha who was the first Prime Minister of South Africa.

Halfway up the terraces is the Delville Wood War Memorial which pays tribute to the South African troops who died in World War One.

The buildings are also home to the South African Police Memorial.

The building itself is more than 275 metres long with a semi-circular shape with a wing on either side.

The Union Buildings are one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions and an emblem of democracy.
